What is TA?

TA or Transactional Analysis is a theory of personality and a systematic psychotherapy for personal growth and personal change. The philosophical assumptions are:

  • People are OK (people are worthy or of value as human beings)

  • Everyone has the capacity to think (apart from the severely brain damaged)

  • People decide their own destiny, and these decisions can be changed.

The therapy deals with the whole personality and includes problems that the individual may experience, whether long-term or a temporary crisis.

Transactional analysis offers a theory of child development  and how life patterns that originated in childhood affect our present thoughts, feelings and behaviours.  It offers

explanations of how we may continue to replay childhood strategies in grown-up life, even when these produce results that are self-defeating or painful.

As a theory of personality, transactional analysis gives us a picture of how people are structured psychologically and it also provides us with a theory of communication that can be extended to analyze systems and organizations.

It can be used in education and organizational settings to help teachers, learners, managers and employees stay in clear communication and avoid setting up unproductive confrontation.  Transactional analysis can be used in any field in which there is a need for understanding individuals, relationships and communication.

What is NLP?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a theory of communication that uses techniques to help others achieve their potential.

The name reflects the fields that have been integrated.

  • Neuro - from neurology – how the brain processes the five senses;

  • Linguistic – how our thinking structures and is structured by language;

  • Programming – from cybernetics and mathematics – how behaviour can

              be structured and sequenced for ease of learning.

It can be used with other TA techniques to enhance a client’s existing strategies and performance to achieve realistic goals that may have been discounted.

NLP is not a therapy but can be used as a tool in counselling, coaching and businesses to enable others think more clearly. It can be used to invite people to notice how they communicate, their patterns of behaviour and how they limit their personal development.
